Senate NDIS inquiry begins today yet less than 10 percent of submissions have been published - 9 June 2026

The Senate inquiry on the Government’s National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026 has received more than 4000 submissions, yet only 440 submissions have been published on the inquiry website as of this morning.

Shadow Minister for the NDIS, Melissa McIntosh MP, said that the backlog was proof of how the Albanese Labor Government has tried to ram this Bill through Parliament with as little scrutiny as possible.
“The first public hearing is scheduled for today in Melbourne, but not all the submissions that the committee has received have been published yet. 440 out of over 4000 submissions is roughly 10 percent of submissions that have been made public.

“The published submissions are virtually unanimous in saying that the Bill cannot be passed in its current form.

“I fought hard for a Senate inquiry so the disability community’s concerns could be heard. But the scrambled and incoherent manner that the Government is trying to conduct this inquiry is stoking fears and concerns about the proposed changes in the Bill. Consulting after the fact is not proper consultation.

“Australians know that the NDIS in its current form is unsustainable. It is costing Australian taxpayers nearly $50 billion a year and supporting almost double the intended number of participants. While urgent reform is needed, we cannot jeopardise the wellbeing of Australians with significant and permanent disabilities who depend on it.

“The inquiry is an opportunity to hear directly from the disability community. Almost all the submissions have pointed out that the timeframe the Government has provided for giving their feedback on this legislation is far too compressed.

“It’s frankly disrespectful how little consideration Minister Butler has for the disability community with this rushed and haphazard inquiry process.”
