JOINT MEDIA STATEMENT

NETWORK OF WOMEN IN PARLIAMENT TO BRING WOMEN TOGETHER ACROSS POLITICAL DIVIDES

Women from across the political spectrum, representing both the House of Representatives and the Senate, are invited to come together in a new Network of Women in Parliament (NOW), with its official launch taking place at Parliament House on Tuesday, 24 November.

Our purpose of NOW is to build connections, strengthen relationships and create an environment where women in Parliament can share experiences, support one another and learn from each other beyond political lines. The initiative has the support of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Hon Milton Dick MP and the President of the Senate, Senator the Hon Sue Lines.

The establishment of NOW reflects a growing recognition of the value of stronger connections between women in Parliament. The devastating attack on our parliamentary colleague Helen Haines has further highlighted the importance of coming together in support, solidarity and friendship across political divides.

Helen has always demonstrated the importance of kindness, compassion and genuine connection across political divides. In many ways, she embodies the very spirit of what NOW hopes to achieve.

We recognise that while our political views may differ, we share many of the same experiences, challenges and responsibilities as women in public life.

Through friendship, trust and solidarity, we want to strengthen the voice of women in Parliament, encourage more Australian women into public life and stand together when it matters.

The inaugural event will also raise funds for Save the Children, Helen’s chosen charity, as a demonstration of our support for Helen and her family.
