Another Optus Triple Zero crisis
Triple Zero calls for more than 14,400 Victorians have been impacted by an Optus outage this morning.
The outage and timeline for restoring services is yet to be determined for Optus customers in the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula areas.
Optus customers needing to call Triple Zero will have to do so via wi-fi or if they are within range the call will be automatically diverted through the Telstra or TPG Telecom networks by camp-on arrangements.
Shadow Minister for Communications, Melissa McIntosh MP said, “there are over 14,400 Victorians worried their Triple Zero calls may not go through to emergency services right now.”
“It is absolutely unacceptable Triple Zero calls are again being impacted by yet another Optus outage. It is sending chills up Australians’ spines this morning. Regardless of the fault, Optus has an obligation to provide Triple Zero services to Australians anywhere and at any time.
“The on-going Triple Zero outages must stop. This is why I have been calling for a full and thorough independent inquiry into the Triple Zero ecosystem. What else will put Australians at ease unless we find every issue in the system and ensure there is a plan to address every fault.
“The Albanese Labor Government and the Australian Media and Communications Authority must speak up and take action. Is it not good enough that every time a Triple Zero outage occurs, the Communications Minister and ACMA are the last to respond or provide Australians with the information they need and deserve.
“This is why I am very concerned the Communications Minister put ACMA in charge of the Optus inquiry into its fatal Triple Zero outage in September. We want transparency and accountability from the government and its agencies – yet all we’ve seen in the last few months is continual blunders, including having not implemented all of the Bean Review recommendations from the Optus 2023 outage, last-minute legislation to give the Triple Zero Custodian authority to do its job and voting down my amendments to strengthen the Triple Zero system.
“I will continue to let Australians know the truth about the flailing Triple Zero network, because the Albanese Government is not.”
